Small words in Chinese EFl learners' spoken English

摘要本文研究英语语篇标识语中的口语小品词。采用的语料库包括 :中国英语学习者中介语口语语料库 ,日本、法国和意大利的同类英语学习者语料库 ,以及英国成年人和青少年的口语语料库等。主要研究这类小品词在各类语料库中的分布频率和类型 ,其语篇和语用功能等。同时还比较了中国英语学习者中口语高分组与低分组小品词的使用频率和类型与其口语流利程度的相关性。作者认为这类小品词有助于提高学生英语口语的流利性。 This is an investigation of a group of discourse markers named 'small words'(e.g. well, sort of). Based on a corpus of Chinese advanced EFL learners' spoken English, corpora of the same type from Japan, France and Italy, and the narrative English speakers' spoken corpora, 'small words' are analyzed in terms of their types, ranges, frequency and discoursal/interactional functions. Comparison is made between more fluent and less fluent Chinese EFL speakers, associating their degree of fluency with their use of 'small words'. The purpose of the study is to highlight the functions of 'small words' in developing speaking fluency and their contribution to EFL teaching and testing.
