James Legge and The Chinese Classics

摘要理雅各的《中国经典》是儒经英译的高峰,至今被西方奉为标准译本。但大陆翻译界和出版界未能给予足够重视,研究严重滞后。本文拟对理雅各生平译述作一简要介绍,并以《论语》为例,分析其学者型翻译的特色与得失。 James Legge' s The Chinese Classics represents the highest achievement in the translation of Confucian Classics and has been regarded as a standard translation in the West. But research in this area is far from being satisfactory in the mainland of China due to lack of attention to the translation in both the translation and publication circles. This article, apart from porviding a brief introduction to Legge and his works, is devoted to an analysis of his scholarly translation of Confucian Analects and its drawbacks as well as merits.
