This study examines the validity of high school GPA and standardized test scores in the admission process and their role in determining applicant eligibility. It also describes the method that the University of California uses to calculate freshman eligibility. The study shows that high school GPA has a higher validity than do test scores.High school GPA mainly reflects student high school course-related achievements, while standardized test scores demonstrate cognitive abilities. Therefore,it is more effective to calculate freshman eligibility by combining GPA and test scores to assess applicant knowledge, abilities, and achievement in college admissions process.
