Sinology and Sinologism:A Critique of China Studies

摘要 汉学是一门几乎与中国研究同名的学问,本文提出的汉学主义却不是汉学的一种形式,而是一个相关而又不同的概念性范畴,该范畴总揽了西方长期以来试图将中国纳入以西方为中心的世界体系的过程中所表现的动机、逻辑、原因、认识论、方法论及其特点。本文试图对中国研究的一些方面进行批判性的审视,其主旨不是要修正谬误和偏见,而是要探讨支配汉学主义的认识论核心和工作逻辑。本文的具体目标有:构想和定义汉学主义,分析其理论框架和范式形成,描绘其在中国研究领域的一些表现,探讨其工作原理和逻辑,指出其带有东方主义的、欧洲中心主义的及族群中心主义的观点、见解、信念和实践,最终目标是为构想出新的、更好的中国知识生产的途径而铺路。 Sinology is a branch of learning almost synonymous with China studies. Sinologism,however,is not a form of sinology but a related conceptual category that comprehensively covers the motivation,logic,rationale,epistemology,methodology,and the characteristic features of the West's long-term endeavor to incorporate China into the Western-centered world system. This article attempts to offer a critical examination of aspects of China studies. Its main aim is not to expose prejudices and correct errors in China studies,but to reveal the epistemic core and working logic that underlie Sinologism. It has these specific objectives:1) to conceive and define Sinologism; 2) to analyze its theoretical framework and paradigm formulations,3) to describe its manifestations; 4) to explore its working rationale and logic; and 5) to identify its Orientalist,Eurocentric,and ethnocentric ideas,views,beliefs,and practices. The ultimate purpose is to pave the way for conceiving new and better approaches to knowledge production about China.
