DLGlutamate release increased by superoxide anion radical (O÷2) and the protection of ebselen were studied in rat cortical slices. Exposure of rat cortical slices to xanthine/xanthine oxidase, a O÷2 generating system, resulted in a marked increase in nondepolarized release of DLglutamate. Ebselen showed a blockade effect on the increase in glutamate release by O÷2.
