During the seventeen years from 1949 to 1966, literary relations between Chinese and foreign countries had been made in a distinctive historical context of mutual confrontation between the East and the West. The special international relationship bestowed on their literary relations a political and ideological feature, thus making it a non-literary social and political action. The criterion of high pohticization for selected hterature for translating resulted in the translation of those foreign works that could express socialist ideology and validly illuminate socialist discourse system of new China. Political thinking restricted the reading of foreign literature; therefore, the themes that the modern enlighteners advocated like freedom, democracy and human rights were absent. The relations between Chinese and foreign literatures in non-literary sense made literary creation influenced much less by the foreign literatures except Soviet literature.
