The results showed that the highest percent germination (91.38%) of cosmos was obtained from Horticulture garden’s seed, marigold (95.25%) obtained from Arboriculture garden’s seed, and calendula (65.88%) periwinkle (79.38%) obtained from Ramna park garden’s seeds. But in the case of hybrid seeds, African marigold showed the highest percent seed germination (98.25%). The Horticulture garden’s seed was better than the others considering the incidence of fungi in all local flower seeds tested. But periwinkle was the lowest affected seed (12.58%, 12.20%, 8.07% incidence) and marigold was the highest affected seed (40.31%, 35.33%, 31.33% incidence) collected from Arboriculture Garden, Ramna Park, and Horticulture Garden, respectively. But in hybrid flower seeds, the lowest fungal infection (3.14%) was recorded in Portulaca and petunia seeds whereas the highest (6.20%) was in African marigold seeds.展开更多

Recent studies have revealed that many Traditional Chinese Medicines(TCMs) are rich sources of polyphenols and exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, and these TCMs have been shown experimentally to overcome some chronic diseases, including cancer. Longan flowers and seeds, two TCMs traditionally used for relieving pain and urinary diseases, have been revealed in our recent reports and other studies to possess rich amounts of polyphenolic species and exhibit strong anti-oxidant activity, and these could be applied for the treatment of diabetes and cancer. Herein, we review the recent findings regarding the benefits of these two TCMs in the treatment of humancancer and the possible cellular and molecular mechanisms of both substances.展开更多

P. Beauv. is the coupling of its flowering stage and outcrossing rate which leads to low and unstable seed yields in self-pollinated foxtail millet hybrids and thereby limits their large-scale application. In this study, Datong 27, Datong 29 and gu 83 were screened and identified through meticulous observations of their pollination habitats. High exposure rate, degree of exposure and plump of stigma are good factors to accept foreign pollen. Datong 27 and Datong 29 have some additional characteristics, such as long filaments and exposed and full anthers that contain a large amount of pollen. We transformed into a series of stigma-exposed and plump sterile lines that easily accepted exotic pollen. New restorer lines with anthers that were full of powder and exhibited quick recovery, which improved the parental lines’ heterosexual characteristics. By tracking and monitoring the leaf development of the new sterile and restorer lines, a coupling law of leaf development was determined and a series of flowering control measures were formulated. These factors ensured that the parental lines encounter one another during the flowering stage. By utilizing fertilizer and water, the vitality of the female stigma, amount of powder scattered and powder loosening time were prolonged, which increased hybrid seed yields from 1500 to 3000 kg/hm2. These findings were helpful in resolving the technical problems of seed production that restricted the propagation of foxtail millet hybrids and supporting future large-scale applications.展开更多

In this study,a blooming plant growing in Zitong County was selected as the experiment subject. The results were as follows: florescence date of Eucalyptus dunnii was Mid-late February to mid to late October. Depending on morphologic change, flowering can be divided into 6 phases: Flower bud differentiation stage, inflorescence formation stage, opercle color change stage, capsule enlargement and shedding ring formation stage, flowering period, seed development stage. The development process of the buds on the same inflorescence was basically the same, the growth of buds near the base of the same branch was faster than that of the top buds, and the development of flower buds in different positions was random. There were 3-4 ovary cavities in a capsule. The number of shriveled seeds was far more than the number of effective seeds, and the average of each capsule contained five normal seeds which could develop into seedlings.展开更多

Mature seeds are consumed for edible and medical purposes and also used as a food additive and flavour. Seed of black cumin has great potentiality as spice crop due to nutritive and medicinal values. The experiments were carried out at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during 2011 to 2012 to determine optimum planting time for seed production of black cumin. The experiment was two factorials. Factor A: 4 genotypes were V1: Exotic, Iran;V2: BARI kalozira-1;V3: Local, Faridpur and V4: Local, Natore. Factor B: sowing date: D1: 16 October;D2: 1 November;D3: 16 November and D4: 1 December. Therefore, treatment combinations were 16 in total. So, in 3 replications total plot was 48. Result revealed that significantly the highest 2.37 t/ha in V1, followed by V2 (1.96 t/ha). V2 and V3 (1.97 t/ha) were statistically similar and maximum yield was obtained from D2 (2.65 t/ha). In combined effect, maximum yield 3.00 t/ha was obtained in V1D2.. Investigation on time of sowing revealed that performance of black cumin was better in earlier sowings (16 October, 1 November) than later ones. The highest yield (4g plant-1;2.65 tha-1) was obtained when the crop was sown on 1 November. Among the genotypes, the exotic one with sowing in 1 November gave the highest seed yield (4.54 g·plant-1;3.00 t·ha-1).展开更多
