Electroporation is a physical process inducing transient bores in cell membranes by the application of pulsed electric fields. There is a significant increase in the exchange of molecules between the cell interior and exterior. The transient, reversible nature of this electrical permeabilization of membranes facilitates the cellular uptake of various drugs, genetic material, proteins, other micro and macromolecules. When the electric fields are cancelled, the bores will be closed. It is important that electroporation is employed as a research tool to study the cell structure and function under pulsed electric fields. The increasing permeability of cell membrane promotes higher uptake of chemotherapeutic drug and enhanced killing of the cancer cells. Electroporation provides a new method for tumor treatment undoubtedly.
