Succinic acid,produced from agricultural carbohydrates by fermentation,has a huge market for producing food and pharmaceutical products,surfactants and detergents,green solvents and biodegradable plastics,and ingredients of animal feeds to stimulate animal and plant growth.Succinic acid-derived products have a market potential to supply over 2.7108 kg industrial products per year.Current research showed that succinic yields can be reached as high as 110g/L from glucose by the newly discovered rumen organism Actinobacillus succinogenes.The cost of succinic acid production has been reduced significantly by using new permentation methods and advanced separation technology for end-product recovery.The low processing cost makes succinic acid and succinic-acid-based chemicals economically attractive.
