The Nobel Prize-winning South African writer J.M.Coetzees novel Waiting for the Barbarians offers a profound literary imagination and reflection on colonial violence through the distinctive lens of liberal intellectuals. Based on Coetzee's stature as an important African postcolonial novelist, much attention has been paid to the humanist theme of the novel in its critique of imperial civilization and colonial tyranny. From the perspective of covert progression, however, there exists a narrative undercurrent of skepticism within the novel that inhibits the humanistic thrust. The covert progression complements and constrains the overt plot, demonstrating the ethical dilemmas of white liberal intellectuals in South Africa during the South African Civil War,conveying the emotional structure of their resistance and complicity in their own identities, and thus revealing the paradox of liberal identity politics in South Africa. On the basis of unraveling the mystery of the " suspicious motive" behind the Magistrate's sheltering of a barbarian girl, this paper examines the unfolding of the novel's covert progression and its implied aesthetic and socio-historical cognitive value.
