The academic literature on teacher stress reflects the tension between the openness of modern schools and their autonomy. This study examines the shift in school boundaries from ancient to modern times as a means of defending school autonomy. It shows that the earliest schools in ancient Greece were exceptional spaces separated from the private and public realms.Schools functioned as a unique arrangement, offering a space where knowledge could be shared freely and where societal norms did not apply. The modernization has transformed the nature of schools which results in their becoming open institution and efforts to deschool have emerged. However, the disappearance of the school boundary has ensnared students in the politics of learning and the consumerisation of learning. The role of the teacher has been reconfigured from professionals who prioritize educational autonomy and ethics to a self-entrepreneur driven by metrics and competition. This shift has resulted in deskilling and depersonalisation. Both students and teachers are alienated.Exposure to the prevailing violence of neoliberalism has been shown to reduce individuals to“bare life”.Consequently, the crisis of education has emerged. This article argues that it is therefore necessary to defend the boundary of the school and to recognize the unique educational significance of the earliest schools as a state of exception.
