The Book of Songs(Shijing)is a work that"rectifies success and failure, moves heaven and earth, and stirs the spirits""Evocation"(xing)constitutes the root and genesis of poetry. As a generative, primordial consciousness existing prior to the dfferentiation of literary form(wen)and substantial content(zhi),"xing"imbues poetry with the liberated artistic conception of"flowing unimpeded between heaven and earth。"Xing"provides the aesthetic dimension of poetry with a wellspring of meaning, for behind"xing"lies the boundless potential of primordial imagination. The hermeneutic space of poetry is opened by"xing".The harmonizing realm of yin and yang depicted in the"Guanju"ode is precisely kindled through"xing"."Xing"endows poetry with an authentic beauty because it embodies a primordial experience of freedom, enabling individuals to attain a primordial comprehension preceding the subject-object dichotomy.Confucianism holds that through"xing",one can ttain the"central mean"(zhongyong),and thereby achieve the ultimate experiential state described as"the operations of high heaven, without sound or smell。"The inherent contradiction between the truth-content and primordial nature of beauty can also be mediated by"xing".Ultimately,"xing"must be actualized in pursuit of the goal of the unity of heaven and humanity(tian ren he yi). This necessitates the cyclical and progressive development of poetry(shi)→ritual(li)→music(yue).Only through this integrated process can the consummate, supremely good and beautiful ritual-musical civilization be realized.
