摘要
以华兹生和汪榕培先生的《庄子》英译本为研究对象,采用语料库工具,从词汇、句子和语篇三个层面进行比较研究,找出其翻译风格的异同,并探究深层原因。研究发现:《庄子》两译本在上述三个层面存在相似与差异。(1)两译本均能较完整地传达原文的语义,承载的信息量相当,且使用较为简单的词汇提高译文的可读性;(2)两译本的翻译风格差异较为明显,例如汪榕培译本的用词更为丰富多样,且倾向使用直译的方法,而华兹生则更倾向使用显化的翻译策略。基于以上差异挖掘背后原因,从翻译背景、目标读者和译者身份三个角度找到答案,以期更加透彻地了解《庄子》英译本所内含的信息。
This paper focuses on a comparative study of two English translations of Zhuangzi,one by Burton Watson and the other by Wang Rongpei.Utilizing corpus tools,the study examines these translations from three linguistic dimensions:vocabulary,sentences,and discourse.It aims to identify similarities and differences in their translation styles and delve into the underlying reasons for these variations.The research findings indicate that the two translations of Zhuangzi exhibit both similarities and distinctions across the three linguistic dimensions.Firstly,both translations effectively convey the semantic content of the original text,carrying a comparable amount of information,and using relatively straightforward vocabulary to enhance readability.Secondly,differences in translation styles between the two versions are also noticeable.For instance,Wang Rongpei’s translation employs a more diverse and rich vocabulary and leans towards a literal translation approach,while Watson tends to use a more explicative translation strategy.Based on these disparities,this study investigates the underlying reasons from three perspectives:translation background,target readership,and the translators’identity,with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the English translations of Zhuangzi.
