Zheng Guanying(1842-1922)was an important representative of the reformers in the late Qing Dynasty. He founded his own organization, advocating commercial competition over military warfare.Zheng Guanying, who had made distinguishable achievements in politics, was a lifelong devotee and practitioner of Taoism. These identities made up the dual aspects of his incredible life.Inner alchemy is a lifelong practice adopted by Zheng. He started with the Southern traditions, gradually overstepped into the Northern, and he had eventually brought together the different alchemical techniques of them.By fathoming the journey of his self-cultivation,it is clear that the ideology of“Northern School”laid the foundation of his belief. To reach conclusions about Zheng's perspective on Taoism, one should begin with his Taoism background of the Northern Quanzhen School as well as his monastic practices. The article will start with Zheng's learning from the Northern School of Taoism and then his interpretation regarding the self-cultivation of both Xing(性,one's nature)and Ming(命,the life). The essay will also discuss his views on merit and virtue, method of practice, wealth, fellowship, and accommodations required for Taoist practice. The truth was,he did not distinguish between different lineages when it came to his masters and friends of Tao;their relationships were purely based on Da Tao(大道,the marvel Tao). The distinctiveness of the southern and northern Quanzhen Taoism, which began to exist after the Song Dynasty, seemed to dissipate at this time.
