The Lost Golden Bell, Mulberry and Peach and Far Away, A River present the transmutative themes of breakthrough, rebellion and integration, reflecting Nieh’s creative state of mind in various stages, a key to the exploration of the writer’s spiritual world and fictional aesthetics. In The Lost Golden Bell, the protagonist, in an act of breakthrough,seeks physical freedom, reflecting the author’s solitude and fighting state of mind in the early 1960s;In Mulberry and Peach, Sang Qing, through rebellion, seeks the double freedom of body and spirit, becoming a typical representative of the fate of exile for the Chinese in the twentieth century, while in Far Away, A River, Lian’er, integrating Chinese and Western cultures in her search for a path to individuality, homeland and the realization of a world of free spirit, expresses the writer ’s beautiful hope for a free world in the 1980s. Thus, breakthrough, rebellion and integration are the development of the theme of freedom in Nieh’s novels, reflecting the transmutation from her search from physical freedom to spiritual freedom and from a free China to a free world, vividly revealing the maturity of the writer’s history of spirit and views of ideal, showing her firm belief in and resolute pursuit of a free world.
