摘要
目的目前对病例数的英译处理存在不同的观点。文章基于平行文本结合真实例子探讨含有病例数的医学论文标题的英译。方法文章利用颇具声誉的《新英格兰医学杂志》自带的在线搜索功能以"cases"为关键字、"research"(研究型论文)为类别,搜索1960年1月-2019年9月期间发表的期刊论文标题并创建相应的文本语料,总结分析英文医学论文标题中病例数的处理方法及其变化,并在平行文本指导下以期刊论文英文标题为例探讨含病例数的医学论文标题英译。结果研究发现,病例数在英文医学论文标题中出现的频率半个世纪以来已经发生了重大变化,病例数不再是医学论文标题中的一个重要组成部分。研究还发现,以前病例数标题往往出现在副标题中,但是近年来不含病例数的主标题已成为首选。然而,中文医学期刊,甚至是核心期刊中的论文英文标题中,病例数仍大量出现在副标题中。这一翻译现状与同体裁的平行文本存在巨大差异。结论医学论文标题的英译,属于汉英应用翻译的范畴,因而必须考虑目的语中的体裁规范,即医学论文标题中已经约定俗成的结构和用法。英语中同类功能和同类体裁的平行文本,为含病例数的医学论文标题的英译提供了很好的借鉴和参考,有助于提高译文的可读性和接受性。
Objective Different opinions exist with regard to the management of case numbers.This article aimed to explore the English translation of medical paper titles containing the number of cases with reference to parallel texts.Methods In this paper,titles of medical research articles were retrieved from the New England Journal of Medicine,a reputable journal with high impact factor,with the searching terms of“cases”under the category of“research”from January,1960 to September 2019.Such titles retrieved constituted the controlled corpus.Then,the ways to deal with numbers of cases in research articles were summarized.Finally,with reference to parallel texts,we discussed the title translation of medical research articles containing case numbers.Results Our findings showed that the frequency of case numbers in medical research articles had dramatically dropped in the past fifty years,indicating that number of cases was no longer an essential component of a medical research article.Moreover,in dealing with case numbers,the title-subtitle form used to be the predominant form while single title has become the preferred choice since the 1980s.In contrast,among English titles of medical research articles in Chinese medical journals,even in medical core journals,case numbers were easily found in subtitles,quite different from their parallel texts.Conclusion English translation of medical article titles falls into the category of applied translation,and should thus take into consideration of genre norms in the target language,i.e.,the established structure and use of medical article titles.Accordingly,parallel texts which bear similar function and style provide a very good reference for the title translation of medical research articles containing case numbers,which is helpful to improve readability and acceptability of target texts.
