摘要
第二次鸦片战争之后,清政府从形式上接受了近代西方外交模式,向"有约各国"派遣常驻使节。这些驻外外交人员写下了大量内容丰富的日记,其中有相当一部分是关于英、法、德、俄、美等国妇女的记述,包括其衣装时尚、文化素养、能力见识、阶层差异等,充满性别、阶层、中西、新旧等多种元素的交汇与碰撞。从1866—1895年的出使日记可以看出,清朝早期驻外外交官大多以"述奇"作为书写的基本出发点,因而关于西方女性的记述和认识不免局限于表象,缺乏全面性和深刻性。并且,深受儒家文化熏染的他们时常流露出中国礼法原则的强烈优越感,用其所熟悉的以礼法和女德为内核的儒家性别伦理,形塑西方妇女,进行价值评判。
After the Second Opium War,the Qing government accepted the modern western diplomatic mode and began to dispatch resident envoys to foreign countries. These diplomats wrote a large number of diaries during their term of office,mostly about women's garments,fashion styles,cultural accomplishments,abilities and representative women from different social ranks in the west. The diaries from 1866 to 1895 recorded and narrated various oddities. Accordingly,those diplomats' descriptions and their views on western women were unavoidably superficial. At the same time,those Confucianismminded diplomats could hardly contain their sense of superiority about Chinese rituals. They made judgements on western women by Confucian gender ethics with rituals and female virtues as the core.
