Juvenile hormone (JH)has important roles in the regulation of insect development and reproduction. Today,there is another product that has been identified to be JH of crustaceans.It is methyl farnesoate (MF).MF is a sesquiterpenoid produced by the mandibular organ (MO)of decapod crustaceans.Its synthesis has been detected in MO from many species.Its chemical structure is similar to JHⅢ,but lacking in the epoxide moiety.JH is produced by corpus allatus (CA).MO as the site of synthesis of MF has been suggested to be an analogeus of insect CA,the site of production of JH,on the basis of similiarities in ultrastructure and embryonic orgin of these two organs .Some studies revealed that MF plays an important physiological role in the regulation of larval development and adult reproduction of Crustacean as JH in insect.
