Based on a historical investigation of the relationship between translation method and translational purpose, this paper finds that people' s recognition of translation is governed by their translational purposes. As different purposes determine different recognition, people employ different translational means and techniques for the purpose, thus translation methods expand with different purposes. This even leads to people' s acceptance of zero translation for communicative purposes in great lingual and cultural difference in translation history. Zero translation, as accepted in translation academic circle, brings about an inverse understanding behavior, in which the translator leads the target readers to the source language and culture to recognize the source item. Such a translation method, though, needs to be differentiated from unrestricted, uncontrolled and indiscriminate translation, it does not mean that translation may contain hidden purposes.
