Objective To investigate the inhibitory effects of electrical stimulation (ES) at "Hegu" Points on atrial fibrillation. Methods Fourteen adult dogs underwent intercostal thoracotomy at both sides after anesthesia. The dogs were randomly divided into two groups. The control group (n = 7) only received 6 hours of rapid aria1 pacing (RAP) and the ES group (n = 7) received 6 hours of RAP and concomitant ES. Effective refractory period (ERP) and atrial fibrilla- tion window of vulnerability (AFWOV) were measured at multiple atrial and pulmonary vein sites at the end of each hour. Results In the control group, ERP was progressively shortened, ERP dispersion and AFWOV dispersion was in- creased at all sites. In the ES group, 6-hour concomitant RAP + ES did not induce any significant change in ERP and AF- WOV. Conclusion ES could suppress atrial fibrillation induced by rapid atrial pacing.
