Verbal impoliteness is universal in human interaction, though its use often impairs the relationship between the communicators. Based on the data analysis, this paper discloses the features of verbal aggressiveness and communicative non-cooperation. Impoliteness is realized by the devices of ridiculing, blaming, swearing and threatening. This study uncovers the pragmatic motivations of verbal impoliteness. At a macro level, it is induced by a speaker's rapport-challenge orientation, and at a micro level, it is prompted to achieve several instrumental goals, i.e. saving self's face, releasing negative emotions, maintaining power, constructing or maintaining identity.
