美国保守主义和自由主义这两大意识形态在公民教育领域展开了长期论战,这被称为"文化的战争"。在公民教育的本质上,保守主义主张公民教育在于赋予学生传统的价值观和正确的知识,维护国家的统一性;自由主义要求培养质疑现存价值并参与改造社会的公民。在公民教育课程领域,保守主义维护以历史为主导的学科知识的传递;自由主义要求建构问题中心的社会科课程;在公民道德教育方面,保守主义坚持灌输传统的道德价值;自由主义希望强化学生的道德思考和道德选择。
It is called the war of culture that the controversy between the conservatism and liberalism on the civic education in the United States. Conservatism believes that the core of civic education should be the traditional values and correct knowledge so as to improve the unity of America while the liberalism thinks that teachers should instruct students to be good at analyzing current various values and reconstructing society. For the civic curriculum, conservatism insists on that history should be the pivotal content in the civic subject system while liberalism plans to construct question-center curriculum of social study. On the area of ethical education, conservatism believes that the traditional values are very important while the liberalism puts more emphasis on ethical thinking and moral choice.
