Early in the 20th century, 'the couse history of Chinese literature' was designed to meet the need of students in new-born universities. As time went on, this course enjoyed growing importance in Chinese departments. With the compulsory use of national textbooks, the diversity in the teaching of this course was substituted by standardization and uniformity. Setting the course in the context of ideology and educational systems, this essay attempts to analyse the gains and losses of this change.
