There are two fundamental synthetic routes for octaethylporphyrin from pyrroles.In the first route,3,4 diethyl 5 methyl 2 ethoxycarbonylpyrrole is used as the precursor and the pyrrolic α methyl carbon turned into the methine bridge of porphyrin.In the second route,the methine bridge composed of the formaldehyde carbon atom was prepared in acid catalysis by condensation of 3,4 diethylpyrrole with formaldhyde.In this paper synthesis of the intermediates and porphyrin are introduced in detail,and six representative total synthetic methods for octaethylporphyrin are reviewed.
