Implicature is a basic concept in the Gricean theory,so its correct understanding is closely related with the correct understanding of the theory. The appropriate Chinese equivalent of implicature is 含意,but many Chinese scholars put it into 含义,which is certainly misleading for beginners of linguistic studies. The present article holds that 含义and 含意 are quite different in meaning:the former refers to what is included, which is objective by nature, while the latter refers to what is suggested, which is subjective in its essence. What is included in an utterance is intrinsic, quiescent and closed, while what is suggested is generated in the process of understanding of an utterance, whose nature is explicit, dynamic and extensible. Therefore, implicature and 含意 mean exactly the same.
