This paper aims at presenting a summarized account of the history of ethnology or cultural anthropo logy in Japan, it involves the relations among colonialism, aggressive war, and Japan's ethnology; the development of Japan's ethnology in type transformation, and colonial heritage, etc. The paper holds that after the war Japan's ethnology has realized the transformation towards cultural anthropology, however, the question how to treat the colonial heritage correctly is still one that cannot be dodged to a certain extent. The paper, as positive responding to recent discussion concerned by ethnologists and cultural anthropologists in Japan, also analyses the existing problems and potential prospects in Sino-Japanese academic exchanges based on the view on the character of ethnology or cultural anthropology.
