Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effects of compressive internal fixation on
mandibular fracture. Methods: After the model of mandibular fracture was established in dogs,
the compression plates were used to treat the fracture. The external callus formation at the site
of fracture was observed at regular intervals. Meanwhile, histological and Xray examination
was conducted. Furthermore, 41 patients with mandibular fracture were treated and observed
likewise. Results: Fractures treated with compression plates showed no visible external
callus and sign of cartilage during the healing process, while the internal callus proceeded
directly across the narrow fracture line. The therapeutic effects of the compressive internal
fixation were satisfactory and complications were encountered only in 5 patients. Conclusion:
The use of compressive internal fixation ensures the primary bone healing, substitutes
conventional method of maxillomandibular fixation and decreases the occurring rate of co
