摘要
弗莱克斯纳是美国著名教育批评家和改革者。他在对20世纪初美、英、德大学进行深入研究后,写成《现代大学论——美英德大学研究》一书。在书中,他具体论述了现代大学的作用与职能、现代大学与外部世界的关系,并认为大学的最重要的职能是发展学术,大学的管理活动要紧密围绕这一目标展开。为了服务于发展学术的目标,他主张大学在管理上要做到目标统一,给予教师充分的大学管理权,努力改善教师工资待遇并为研究者创造宽松的科研环境。
Abraham Flexner was a famous critic and reformer of education in America. After making intensive research on American, Britain and German universities, he published Universities： American, English, German in 1930. In this book, he discussed the functions and the duties of a modern university and its relationship with society. He argued that the most important duty of a university is developing knowledge, around which the university administration should be centered. He also maintained that, in order to serve academic research, a university should have only one aim, namely giving teachers a say in university administration, helping them live an easy life, and creating a relaxed environment for their research.
