The cause of forging cracks in XM-19 stainless steel billet has been investigated. The results showed that because the furnace temperature was too high, the grain boundary plasticity of the billet decreased greatly and the strength of the grain boundary was lower than that of the grains. While the billet was forged, cracks originated from the grain boundary and the original defects on the surface, and extended along the grain boundary. The fracture showed typical intergranular fracture characteristics.
