Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional intestinal disorder, however, it is relatively less frequently studied in the coastal areas of China. Ahns: To investigate the clinical characteristics of IBS patients in the coastal areas of Qingdao and to appraise the causes of IBS. Methods: From January to December 2007, IBS outpatients coincident with Rome III criteria at the GI clinics of the Affiliated Hospital of Medical College, Qingdao University were enrolled in this study. The general data, clinical manifestations and dietary habits of the participants were inquired by questionnaires, and the relevant risk factors were analyzed. Results: A total of 6360 outpatients were diagnosed as IBS based on Rome IU criteria, occupying 19.6% of the overall patients attending our GI clinics. The ratio of male to female was 1:1.12. Most IBS patients were young and urban dwellers, with high education levels, low income and common living conditions. Spring was the most common season of IBS attack. Of all the IBS patients, diarrheapredominant IBS (IBS-D) was the most common subtype (49.3%), and was more likely to have intestinal manifestations. Compared with the normal control group, IBS patients had some bias in their dietary habits, and were more likely to have upper gastrointestinal and systemic manifestations. Conclusions: Incidence rate of IBS in coastal areas of Qingdao is not low, the female patients and IBS-D subtype are more, and it may be related with environmental factors and dietary habits.
