The distribution of substance P receptor (SPR) was immunohistochemically investigated in the huaman medullary and spinal dorsal horns. SPR like immunoreativity (LI) was mainly located in the neuronal cell bodies and dendrities, and the majority of the SPR positive neurons exhibited Golgi like staining outline. The distribution pattern in the medullary spinal dorsal horns was similar to each other. The SPR positive neurons wre distributed mainly in lamina I, sparsely in the deeper laminae. The present results suggested that the SPR positive neurons in the human medullary and spinal dorsal horns, especially in lamina I, may accept nociceptive information from periphery through substance P.
