摘要
在中国的城市地名翻译实际中,城市建制通名的英译和外国中小城市地名的汉译还存在较大的随意性,一定程度上影响到了中国的国际交流活动,造成了一些误解,应该进行规范.文章重点探讨了其中最为常见的直辖市、地级市和县级市的英译问题,强调指出直辖市的现译名municipality的不准确性及其误导效果,并结合外国罗马化地名之汉字转写的实际,提出了地名标准法制化这一总的解决思路.
The arbitrariness in the practice of translation of city names has caused much misunderstanding between the Chinese people and foreigners, which often has bad influences on international relationships. In this treatise, the author explores the three major problems in the translating practice and offers solutions to them. The term metropolis is strongly recommended. It＇s also pointed out that the best way is to standardize the translation of place names.
