The verb-particle noun compounds, like comeback, showoff and makeup, chiefly refer to those compound nouns derived from phrasal verbs via conversion and compounding. The first part of the paper deals with the widespread use of the noun compounds in North America, esp. in the USA, over the last few years. The second part proceeds with a linguistic account for the motivations underlying the compounds in the following four aspects: (1) syntactically the noun compounds are ready alternatives to their cognate phrasal verbs; (2) conceptually they express episodic acts other than time-defined activities; (3) their lexical meanings can be extended via metaphor or metonymy; and (4) they are favored by English native-speakers in North America. Finally, some pedagogical implications are proposed that Chinese EFL learners interpret the meanings of such nouns in context.
