White Teeth, the first book of contemporary British novelist Zadie Smith, represents twentieth-century British multiculturalism and celebrates the heterogeneity of post-colonial Britain. This paper is an attempt to investigate the different notions of national identity represented by three British immigrant generations. It aims at revealing the evolution of national identity in a multicultural era, from hegemonic assimilation or national purification, to the formation of a more fluid and mixed conception of identity.
