Netspeak is a new language variety used in online communication (especially on the Internet). Most of the terms in Chinese netspeak are translated from their English equivalents. During this borrowing, an unconventional method called "neo-transliteration" is adopted. Terms translated via this method are neither equivalents of the source language terms in pronunciation, nor in meaning and thus often misleading. Such terms, however, have been gaining popularity not only in the cyber world, but also in people's daily communication. Some of them have even become authorized members of Chinese. The reason that such unconventional terms could survive and are gaining favor lies in the fact that both cyber culture and netspeak carry postmodern features.
