In order to provide a comprehensive understanding and an accurate translation of the term information resource, this article traces the origin and usage of the word resource, and how Karl Marx interpreted source of life and means of labour in his classical work Critique of the Gotha Programme. By using LISA as a tool, the article explores the development of using information resource as titles of articles in library and information science. It also introduces the coinage of IRM in American government′s documents and its special meaning. In conclusion, the authors consider that information resource is a very general term with broad spectrum. Whenever using it, one must put it into a certain context with concrete conditions.
