Abstract It is worthwhile to have a retrospective review of HGP when its achievements have been highlyacknowledged and listed as one of the greatest projects in the history of natural sciences 10 years afterits initiation. HGP is both a challenge and an opportunity to China. China should reformulate its ownHGP and focus on the gene identification by taking advantage of its rich genetic resources and by sharing the human genome data achieved by the world-wide HGP.
