The data of the performance for men's 400-meter running in 1997 world championship are deeply analyzed in this paper. The following conclusions are drawn: the performance of 400 meters running for man has been increased steadily but have been up and down regularly in the Olympiad; generally, the fastest speed appears from 50 meters to 150 meters, the decrease of speed appears at 300 meter; the stride length gets to the shortest from 300 meters to 350 meters, and then longer a little during the sprint phase; for most of the athletes, stride frequency gets to the top level from 50 meters to 100 meters and then decrease step by step. Correlativity between stride frequency and stride length is negative, but correlativity between age and stride length is positive, top speed and stamina are determinant for 400meter.
