摘要
语言是一种约定俗成的社会现象,形式和意义不一定——对应。在英语中,为了取得某种修辞或表达效果,如委婉拒绝或批评等,人们用肯定形式的句子表达否定的意义,汉译时要适当地表达清楚它的否定含义。了解和学习这种形式和意义不统一,互相矛盾的语言现象是提高语言修养的重要途径,更有益于提高理解和翻译能力。
There exist some words, expressions and sentence structures in English language which are affirmative in form but negative in meaning. This linguistic phenomenon is employed in order to achieve certain effects, such as to criticize indirectly, to refuse politely, to show one,s strong feelings and emotions, and so on. When put into Chinese, words of negative meanings must be used. It is a particularity of English negation and deserves our special attention.
