Angiotensin-converting enzyme in human skeletal muscle can be encoded by either of two variants of the ACE gene, one of which carries an insertion of 287 base pairs. This longer allele gives rise to lower enzyme activity, and is associated with enhanced endurance performance and an anabolic response to intense exercise training. The PCR was used to determine the genotypes of an I/D polymorphism in intron 16 of the ACE gene in 40 athletes and 20 healthy subjects as controls. The results show the genotype II and I allele frequency were significantly higher in endurance athlete (35%,0.650) than in healthy group(15%,0.525). Further work will be needed to explore the mechanisms underlying these observations.
