Objective: To explore the relationship between the effect of mutual regulation on the changes of bioactivities of several sex hormones and cognitive impairment in elderly people. Methods: The cognitive function of 216 recruited residents aged ≥ 60 were tested with Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE). On the basis of MMSE scores, the samples were divided into two groups, the normal cognitive group and the impaired cognitive group; the following serum sex hormone levels of the recruited samples were measured with radioimmunoassay: they were pro-lactin, estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, and the changes of the sex hormone levels in the normal cognitive group compared with those in the impaired cognitive group in the same sex. Results: In the same sex, the levels of serum pro-lactin, estradiol and testosterone in the impaired cognitive group were significantly lower than those in the normal cognitive group (P <0.05). Conclusions: The degeneration of cognitive function may be associated with the decline of serum estradiol, testosterone and prolactin levels. Cognitive function is closely associated with the changes of bioactivities of several sex hormones and their mutual regulations or antagonism; therefore, it cannot be summarized with a single factor.
