It was shown that the average valence of Fe in minerals is related to the ratio Fe Lβ/Fe Lα. The T FeO and the counting rates of Fe Lβ and Fe Lα of an unknown sample were measured by electron probe. The average valence of Fe was obtained from a correlation curve of Fe L#βFe Lα versus and average valence of Fe which was constructed by using a series of iron-bearing mineralstandards. The contents of Fe(II)and Fe(III)could be calculated from the following equations:
XFeo=[(3--N) ×nFc×nFe2O3]/[(N-2) ×nFeO×2nFe+ (3-N) ×nFe×nFe2O3] × c% XFe2O3=[(N-2)×nFe×nFe2o3]/[(N-2)×nFeO×2nFe+ (3-N) × nFe×nFe2O3]×c% where XFeo and XFe2o3 are the percentage contents of FeO and Fe2O3 in the sample, 2V the average valence of Fe in the sample, n the molecuter (or atomic) weight, and c the TFeO in the sample, respectively.
