英语新闻语篇用词丰富多彩。本文论述英语新闻语篇的主要用词特点：专有名词和数字数词大量涌现；缩略词和新闻体词使用频繁；情态词和引述动词应用恰当；新词新短语源源不断；生动形象的词语引入注目；书面语与口语并行不悖；词语省略十分多见；新闻语域多种多样。文章例证了这些用词特点，说明了它们常见的原因，并指出其功能。
Words and phrases used in English news texts are rich and varied. This paper discusses the main features of diction in English news texts: proper nouns, figures and numerals emerge in large numbers; abbreviated and news-style words appear frequently; modals and reporting verbs turn up properly; new words and phrases come out in a steady stream; vivid and graphical words are appealing; colloquialisms as well as formal words and phrases coexist in harmony; omission of words and phrases often occurs; news registers are of various kinds. The paper illustrates these features of wording in English news texts, explains the reasons for their common appearance and points out their functions.
