摘要
从语言的社会功能看,英汉文化差异在词汇层面上往往体现得最为突出,涉及面也最广。本文通过分析不同名词在英汉两种语言中所蕴含的意义,从词汇意蕴层面探讨了英汉文化的差异,指出文化词在很大程度上反映了不同民族、不同时代人们的文化心理、审美情趣和时代风尚。同时,通过对英汉词语中词汇空缺现象、词义的联想和文化意象差异以及词语的语义和文化内涵不等值现象的分析,阐述了深刻理解英汉词语的文化内涵在翻译实践中的重大意义。
From the viewpoint of social functions of a language, cultural distinctions are most prominent and wide-spread at lexical levels. Focusing on the different cultural connotations of Chinese and English words, this paper explores the cultural difference between English and Chinese at lexical levels, arguing that culturally-loaded words reflect to a great extent the cultural, moral and aesthetic values of different races and people of different times. The main emphasis has been laid on the perception of some culturally-loaded words lacking in lexical counterparts, differences in word-meaning association and cultural images as well as finer distinctions in semantic meanings and word connotations in bilingual translation. Meanwhile, it underscores the great significance of a clear understanding of culturally-loaded words in translation practice.
