In response to the central governments policy of promoting native place education at local level during the late Qing reform period, a considerable amount of native place education materials were compiled in provinces by local literati who were under the influences of various new concepts and trends at the turn of the 19 th and the 20 th centuries. Focusing on native place textbooks and gazetteers in Guangdong from 1906 to 1911, we show how local literati redefined local state relations within a totally new discourse. These textbooks also reflect local conflicts among various interest groups. The compilers were mostly local leaders who dominated educational affairs. Their views on national identity were influential among young students in late Qing and early Republican China.
