Tongwan-cheng City at the southern edge of the Maowusu Sands was the capital of
Bactria, the kingdom founded by Helianbobo (a descendant of the Huns) in the Sixteen Kingdoms period. In the present paper, the authors restudy the city by reading remote sensing aerophotographic films, analyzing historical records and investigating on the spot. They preliminarily reconstruct the city's form, inquire into the features of cultural exchanges between northern and southern China reflected in it, and make some analysis of the natural environments of the city during its early period. The city form of Tongwan-cheng embodied the architecture of capitals in the Han culture of the Central Plains. On the other hand, it retained some traditional customs of the northern nomadic tribes. Moreover, it reflected the thought of interaction between Heaven and man and taking the heavens and earth as the examples of man' s world.
