Modules are semi-independent subsystems, which can be coupled with other similarparts, following a set of rules, to form a more complex system or process. Almost all systems can be separated into modules. Modularity refers to the degree to which a system' s components can be separated and recombined. Modularization is a new form of division of labor that can enhance the efficiency of innovation and reduce transaction cost. Through simplifying system problems, enhancing flexibility, reducing time consumption, and decentralizing decision-making, modularization can be explored as an effective way of solving complex system problems. The key to modularization lies in functional analysis of the system, whereas the degree of modularity depends on the separability of the system and the heterogeneity of inputs and demands.
