Aim To examine the safety and effectiveness of topical anesthesia for small-incision non-phacoemulsification cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Methods A random sample of 220 cases (256 eyes) of cataract were treated with small-incision non-phacoemulsification cataract extraction and IOL implantation. Before operation, they were divided into 2 groups: the group shaving topical anesthesia (126 eyes of 110 cases) and the group having retrobulbar anesthesia (130 eyes of 110 patients). The effectiveness of the operation and incidence of complications were compared between the 2 groups. Results Compared with the group haveing retrobulbar anesthesia, the time of operation was shorter and complications were fewer in the group having topical anesthesia (P <0.01). However there was no significant difference in postoperative vision (P≥0.5) between the 2 groups at the first day and the first week postoperatively (P>0.05). Conclusion Topical anesthesia can be used safely and effectively for small-incision non-phacoemulsification cataract extraction and IOL implantation with fewer complications. Besides it is easy to perform.
