Objective: To investigate the association among intratumor microvessel density(IMD), DNA content and prognosis in the patients with renal cell carcinoma. Methods: The renal cell carcinoma of 76 cases were studied by immunohistochemical staining (LSAB method) for IMD and by a computerized image analysis system for DNA content. The correlation among IMD, DNA content and renal cell carcinoma type, Robson stage, clinical grade, metastasis, prognosis was studied. Results: No correlation was detected among different cell type, clinical grade and expression of IMD( P > 0. 05). IMD levels increased with Robson stages ( P < 0. 05). IMD was significantly higher in tumors with metastasis (P < 0. 01) compared with that in tumors without metastasis. IMD and DNA contents of the 5 year survivals were significantly lower than those of the death within 5 years ( P < 0. 05). IMD has a positive correlation with DNA content in renal cell carcinoma patients after nephrectomy. Conclusion: IMD is related with tumor behavior in renal cell carcinoma patients after radical nephrectomy. IMD and DNA contents are of great prognostic significance for renal cell carcinoma patients after radical nephrectomy.
