Presupposition is the implicit information or proposition embedded in a sentence or utterance. As a pragmatic phenomenon, presupposition plays a significant role in the construction of literary text. First of all, presupposition is often employed by the author in the establishment of the fictional world and thus helps the reader interpret the literary text in question. Secondly, presupposition contributes to the economy of linguistic expressions in literary text. Thirdly, presuppositional clash is an important literary device used by the author to create humorous or absurd effects.
